El Naturhouse La Rioja ha logrado una victoria crucial frente al Aalborg, al que superó por 25-23, lo que mantiene vivas sus esperanzas de pasar a la siguiente ronda de la Velux EHF Champions League. Los hombres de Jota González consiguieron mantener la ventaja en el marcador gracias a una sobresaliente labor defensiva y, sobre todo, a una portería soberbia.

Desde el primer minuto se palpó que el Naturhouse La Rioja había salido a una ‘final’, tomando la iniciativa y encarando cada jugada con intensidad, llegando a tener hasta cuatro goles de ventaja (12-8). El Aalborg se estrellaba una y otra vez contra el muro de un Jorge Martínez inmenso y marcharon todo el primer tiempo a remolque (13-10)

El equipo rival despertó en la segunda mitad, y aparecieron Larsen y Jakobsson para ordenar sus filas e igualar el marcador (15-15). Pero el Naturhouse La Rioja no se dejó vencer por el pesimismo y volvió a la carga espoleado por la afición del Palacio de los Deportes de La Rioja y las vitales paradas de Jorge (22-20).

Los minutos finales fueron muy emocionantes. Con 24-23 en el luminoso, el Aalborg se tropezó hasta en tres ocasiones con la defensa y el portero del Naturhouse La Rioja, sin duda decisivos en este triunfo que nos acerca un poco más a la siguiente fase.

Naturhouse La Rioja (ESP) vs. Aalborg Handball (DEN) 25:23 (13:10)

A brilliant second half of goalkeeper Jorge Martinez was the key for the home victory in the “do or die” game against Aalborg. Spanish team had the better end and have six points on their account now, while the Danes remain on eight points.

A strong defence and a clearly higher efficiency in attack provided Naturhouse La Rioja with a three goal margin at the break. The Danish champions had enormous problems in attack, as only each third shot reached the net in the first 30 minutes.

But coach Nikolaj Jacobsen woke up his team in the dressing room. After only ten minutes the result was 16:16, and a double strike of Morten Slundt and Mads Mensah Larsen even delivered a 18:16 lead for the Danes, who caused a La Rioja time-out with 18 minutes left.

The match became a combative fight for every ball and every centimeter – and goalkeeper Jorge Martinez became the tower of power in the clearly improving La Rioja squad.

At 20:20 two consecutive penalty goals of Angel Fernandez boosted their confidence for the 22:20, followed by another Aalborg time-out. And again the roller coaster turned its direction. Aalborg levelled again, when Slundt scored his eighth and last goal for 23:23.

The final minute was a Hitchcock-style: Aalborg, down 23:24, replaced their goalkeeper by a seventh court player – and even had a two man advantage after a suspension against Thiago Petrus. But failing twice against outstanding goalkeeper Martinez meant their defeat at the end.
